The relative isolation of many circumpolar communities no longer insulates us from the global threat of new and reemerging infectious diseases. Of particular concern to Arctic residents are the re-emergence of diseases such as tuberculosis, and diphtheria, the emergence of antibiotic resistance among bacteria that were once susceptible to antibiotics (tuberculosis,?Streptococcus pneumoniae,?Hemophilus influenzae,?Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus sp) the appearance of new viruses causing Hepatitis (Hepatitis C), old viruses causing disease outbreaks (Hepatitis A, and Respiratory Syncytial virus), and the infectious causes of cancer (Hepatitis B, Human Papilloma virus, and?Helicobacter pylori). The discussion group will focus on information sharing on prevention and control strategies, including surveillance, applied research, and evaluation of potential interventions.
